Enlarged Prostate

When your prostate gland is bigger than usual, you have an enlarged prostate. It is sometimes referred as BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Benign translates as not cancerous. Additionally, hyperplasia denotes excessive cell proliferation.

The prostate gland keeps expanding as an adult grows older. BPH is the most prevalent prostate condition in persons over 50 due to aging. As the prostate grows, it may bump up on the bladder and squeeze the urethra. As a result Urine flow may become slow or stopped completely.

Trying to pass pee through a small urethra may cause the bladder muscle to become weaker over time. When this takes place, Bladder can not be empty completely.

Symptoms of BPH include:

  • Having a frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Waking up many times to urinate
  • Trouble starting to urinate
  • A stream that's weak, slow, or stops and starts
  • Dribbling after urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Feeling that you can't completely empty your bladder
  • Pain after ejaculation or during urination
  • Urine with an unusual color or smell

To identify the enlarged prostate, the following tests may be done:

  • Urinary tract and prostate ultrasound.
  • Urine tests.
  • PSA (prostate-specific antigen test).
  • Uroflowmetry & urodynamic tests to examine bladder capacity to store and excrete urine.
  • A cystoscopy to examine the Prostate, bladder, and urethra.
