Hydrodistension of bladder procedure can be both diagnostic (aiding in the diagnosis) and therapeutic (resulting in treatment or relief). The goal of this procedure is to aid in the diagnosis of a condition known as interstitial cystitis (IC).

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that causes urinary pressure, pain, and, in some cases, pelvic pain. The discomfort ranges from mild to severe. The condition is part of a group of conditions known as painful bladder syndrome.

Symptoms of Interstitial cystitis

If you have interstitial cystitis, your symptoms may change over time, resurfacing in response to common triggers such as menstruation, prolonged sitting, stress, exercise, and sexual activity.

• Pain in your pelvis or between the vagina and anus
• Chronic pelvic pain
• A persistent, urgent need to urinate
• Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night
• Pain or discomfort while the bladder fills and relief after urinating
