Vasectomy reversal
Vasectomy is minor surgery to block sperm from reaching the semen that is ejaculated from the penis. Semen still exists, but it is devoid of sperm. The testes continue to produce sperm after a vasectomy, but it is absorbed by the body. Except for abstinence, a vasectomy is the most effective method of birth control.
Vasectomy reversal reopens the pathway for sperm to enter the semen. The cut ends of the vas are usually reattached. The ends of the vas are sometimes joined to the epididymis. These procedures can be carried out using a special microscope ("microsurgery"). Sperm can now flow through the urethra after the tubes are joined.
Treatment
One of the two vasectomy reversal procedures can be carried out:
- Vasovasotomy (VV), in which the cut ends of the vas deferens are stitched together.
- Vasoepididymostomy (VE), a procedure in which a bypass around the blockage is created to reconnect the vas to the unblocked epididymis.
