Kidney cyst
Kidney cysts are fluid-filled pouches that form on or in the kidneys. Kidney cysts can be associated with disorders that impair kidney function. But more often, kidney cysts are a type called simple kidney cysts. Simple kidney cysts aren't cancer and rarely cause problems.
Simple kidney cysts are frequently discovered during an imaging exam for another condition. Treatment is usually unnecessary unless simple cysts cause symptoms.
Simple kidney cysts typically don't cause symptoms. But if a simple kidney cyst grows large enough, symptoms may include:
- Blood in your urine
- Dull pain in the back or side
- Fever
- Upper stomach pain
- Pain in your side, back, or upper abdomen if they enlarge and press on other organs
- Fever, chills, or other signs of infection
- Blocked blood or urine flow through your kidneys (rare)

Tests and procedures used to diagnose simple kidney cysts include:

Two approaches to treat kidney cyst include:
- Cyst sclerotherapy
- Laparoscopic method
Aspiration-sclerotherapy and laparoscopic decortication are both effective and safe treatments for symptomatic simple renal cysts. For medium-sized renal cysts, aspiration-sclerotherapy is preferable, whereas laparoscopic decortication is preferable for large cysts.
Laparoscopic kidney cyst ablation is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing symptomatic kidney cysts while leaving the rest of the kidney intact. It is intended to help patients who have flank pain, abdominal pain, or a kidney cyst that has obstructed their kidney.
