Bladder neck incision (BNI) is a surgical procedure used to treat men who have a decreased urinary stream as a result of tight muscles at the bladder neck. This procedure aims to clear the blockage, improving the urinary stream and easing symptoms.

This could also be caused by scar tissue from previous surgery (such as a TURP or prostatectomy), catheterization, radiation treatment, or trauma.

Symptoms

Patients may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Weak urine stream
  • Increased urinary frequency
  • Increased urinary urgency
  • Nocturia
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder Diagnosis

Tests to diagnose tightening of bladder neck include:

  • Urine flow test
  • Video urodynamic studies
  • Cystoscopy
