A prostate biopsy is a procedure that removes suspicious tissue samples from the prostate. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland in males that produces fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.
Signs and Symptoms
Your doctor may advise you to have a prostate biopsy if a blood test reveals that you have a higher-than-normal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level or during a digital rectal exam, your provider discovers a lump or abnormality in your prostate.
Diagnosis
Tests to diagnose the need of prostate biopsy include:
- Blood test to measure PSA levels.
- Digital rectal exam (DRE)
