Prostate Biopsy

A prostate biopsy is a procedure that removes suspicious tissue samples from the prostate. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland in males that produces fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.

Signs and Symptoms

Your doctor may advise you to have a prostate biopsy if a blood test reveals that you have a higher-than-normal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level or during a digital rectal exam, your provider discovers a lump or abnormality in your prostate.

Diagnosis

Tests to diagnose the need of prostate biopsy include:

  • Blood test to measure PSA levels.
  • Digital rectal exam (DRE)
